Andrea Hobson — Teaching & Conducting

Andrea Hobson is an experienced brass educator, conductor and ensemble director with a particular focus on euphonium, low brass and youth music education.

Her teaching combines instrumental technique with musical development, ensemble playing, music theory and an emphasis on developing confident and independent young musicians.

Instrumental Teaching

Andrea teaches:

  • Euphonium
  • Baritone
  • Tenorhorn
  • Tuba and low brass
  • Brass ensemble/Brass Band/Wind band

She works with beginners through to advanced students and adapts her teaching to the individual needs and musical goals of each student.

Music Education

Andrea has worked as a brass teacher at the Beau Soleil Music school, Cape Town and the Orchesterschule Klangwelt in Jena.

Her teaching includes instrumental technique, breathing and sound production, musical interpretation, sight-reading, music theory, aural skills and preparation for concerts and competitions.

Ensemble & Youth Brass Work

Andrea is particularly active in youth brass education and ensemble development. She works with young musicians through brass bands, ensembles, workshops, concerts and competitions.

Her educational work includes ensemble direction, sectional rehearsals, concert preparation and the development of contemporary repertoire for young brass musicians.

Conducting

Andrea has experience conducting and directing brass ensembles, wind band, brass band, and youth orchestras. She is particularly interested in creating engaging and inclusive ensemble experiences while developing strong musical and technical foundations.

Composition & Education

As a composer and performer, Andrea also brings contemporary repertoire directly into her teaching. Her compositions have been performed by young musicians and used in educational and competition settings.

She is passionate about expanding the repertoire available to young brass players and encouraging young musicians to engage with new music.
