Andrea Hobson — Composer

Andrea Hobson is a South African composer based in Germany. Her compositions focus particularly on euphonium, brass band, brass ensemble and chamber music, combining her experience as a professional performer with her interest in developing new repertoire for brass instruments.

Andrea studied composition at Rhodes University, where she worked with Pieter Louis van Dijk in classical composition and John Edwards in jazz orchestration. She completed a Master of Music degree with majors in Euphonium Performance, Brass Pedagogy and Composition.

Her music ranges from solo works for euphonium and other brass instruments to chamber music, brass ensemble and brass-band repertoire. Her compositions explore a variety of musical styles, from contemporary classical music to jazz-influenced and popular styles.

Inspired by Blue

Solo euphonium

Inspired by Blue has become part of the international euphonium repertoire and has been selected for major international euphonium competitions, including the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium & Tuba Festival, Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, SCRTEC and SERTEC.

The work has also been recorded by euphonium soloist Bente Illevold.

African Sky

Solo euphonium and piano

African Sky was selected as repertoire for the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium & Tuba Festival and has been performed and recorded internationally.

The work was also selected for the Australian National Brass Band Championships Open Solo competition and for LRSM examination repertoire.

Silver-Backed Fox

Solo Flugelhorn and brass band (also piano accompaniment)

Silver-Backed Fox was premiered at the RNCM International Brass Band Festival in 2025. The work was subsequently selected as the Championship Flugelhorn Solo for the 2026 New Zealand National Brass Band Championships.

Dawn

Brass band

Dawn was commissioned for and received its world premiere at the RNCM International Brass Band Festival in 2025.

Gazella

Tenor horn and brass band

Gazella was recorded by tenor horn soloist Anabel Voigt as part of her album Farbenspiel.

Wilderness Funk

Brass ensemble

Wilderness Funk has been performed by young brass musicians in Germany and has appeared in Jugend musiziert competitions, including the Bundeswettbewerb.

Fearless

Brass / chamber repertoire

Fearless has been performed as part of international euphonium and tuba conference repertoire.
