Her performance experience encompasses orchestral, brass band, wind band and chamber music, as well as solo performance. She has performed in South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, Brazil, Singapore and Spain, and has a particular interest in solo and contemporary repertoire for euphonium and low brass.
Professional Performance
Andrea studied at Rhodes University and the University of the Free State in South Africa, graduating in 2010 with a Master of Music specialising in Euphonium Performance, Brass Pedagogy and Composition.
During her studies and early professional career, she performed as a euphonium and trombone player with ensembles including the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. She was also principal euphonium of the South African Youth Wind Orchestra and principal trombone of the South African Youth Orchestra.
Her international orchestral experience includes performing as principal trombone with the Bern Youth Orchestra in Switzerland. She has also participated in international euphonium and tuba festivals in the United States and Brazil.
Since moving to Germany in 2019, Andrea has worked extensively as a freelance low-brass musician, performing with orchestras, brass bands, wind ensembles and chamber groups throughout Germany. Her orchestral work has included performances with the Sächsische Bläserphilharmonie and Thüringer Symphoniker.
In 2026, Andrea joined the Polizeiorchester Thüringen as a professional euphonium and baritone player.
Solo Performance
Solo performance is a central part of Andrea’s artistic work. Her repertoire focuses particularly on the euphonium and baritone and includes traditional and contemporary solo repertoire, brass band repertoire, chamber music and her own compositions.
Andrea has performed as a featured euphonium soloist in concert settings in Germany and internationally. In Jena, she has appeared as a soloist in both orchestral and ceremonial concert settings, including a performance with the Sinfonieorchester Carl Zeiss Jena as well as the Brass Band BlechKLANG at the Volkshaus Jena in 2026. She has also performed as a soloist at the University of Jena’s Schillertag celebrations.
Her work as a soloist is closely connected with her work as a composer. She regularly performs and promotes new repertoire for euphonium and low brass, including her own compositions and works by contemporary composers.
Euphonium & Baritone
Andrea’s main performance instrument is the euphonium, for which she has developed a broad repertoire as both a soloist and ensemble musician.
She is equally experienced as a baritone player and works professionally across both instruments. Her playing combines the technical demands of orchestral and brass-band performance with a particular interest in expressive solo playing.
Her repertoire ranges from traditional British brass-band and orchestral music to contemporary works, chamber music and newly commissioned repertoire.
Brass Band, Wind Band & Chamber Music
Andrea has extensive experience performing in brass bands, wind bands and chamber ensembles.
She has performed with a variety of ensembles in Germany and internationally, while also maintaining a broad freelance career with different orchestral, brass and chamber-music organisations.
Her chamber-music work includes performances with brass ensembles and smaller mixed ensembles, and she is a founding member of The Phax Trio.
Contemporary Music & New Repertoire
Andrea has a particular interest in contemporary music and the development of new repertoire for euphonium, baritone and low brass.
As both a composer and performer, she frequently combines these two areas of her work. Her compositions have been performed internationally, with several works selected for competitions, festivals, examinations and recital programmes.
Her composition Inspired by Blue, for example, has been selected as repertoire for major international euphonium competitions and festivals. Other works, including African Sky, Silver-Backed Fox and Dawn, have been performed and premiered internationally.
Andrea’s 2025 album From the Outset documents a selection of her work as a composer and performer.
International Experience
Andrea’s performance career has taken her to South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, Brazil, Singapore and Spain.
She attended the International Euphonium Tuba Festival in Atlanta in 2014 and received the Earl L. Louder Award to attend the festival again in 2018. In 2015 she participated in the International Music Festival in Pelotas, Brazil, working with internationally recognised euphonium performers and composers.
Her international experience has contributed to an individual artistic approach that combines her South African musical background with the traditions of British brass playing and a strong interest in contemporary and culturally diverse repertoire.
Current Performance Work
Andrea continues to perform as a euphonium and baritone player, soloist and ensemble musician. Alongside her position with the Polizeiorchester Thüringen, she maintains an active freelance career with orchestras, brass bands, wind bands and chamber ensembles.
Her performance work is closely connected with her teaching and composing, with a particular focus on developing the profile of the euphonium and baritone as solo instruments and expanding opportunities for new low-brass repertoire.
