Earlier Performances & International Career
Before 2024, Andrea Hobson established a career as a euphonium and brass performer in South Africa and Europe, performing as a soloist, orchestral musician and chamber musician.
International Performance
Andrea was principal trombone with the Bern Youth Orchestra in Switzerland and performed internationally as a soloist, including tours to Singapore and Spain. She also participated in the International Euphonium & Tuba Festival in Atlanta in 2014 and received the Earl L. Louder Award to attend the festival in the USA in 2018.
2023
Andrea continued to appear as a featured euphonium soloist in concert programmes in Germany, including performances of Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s Donegal Bay and Puccini’s Your Tiny Hand Is Frozen. Contemporary reviews specifically praised her solo performances.
2022
Andrea was featured as a solo euphonium in BlechKLANG’s Terra Pacem concert programme and performed Bert Appermont’s The Green Hill as a soloist during the band’s Christmas concerts.
2021
Andrea’s composition Inspired by Blue was recorded by Norwegian euphonium soloist Bente Illevold for the album Alene. The recording subsequently received reviews from Norwegian and international music publications.
Andrea’s euphonium duet Fearless was premiered online in 2021.
South Africa
Andrea performed as a euphonium and trombone soloist and orchestral musician with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside work with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, Free State Symphony Orchestra, Windworx and Cape Town Concert Brass.
She was also principal euphonium of the South African Youth Wind Orchestra and principal trombone of the South African National Youth Orchestra, working with conductors including Osmo Vänskä and Sir Roger Norrington.
